Areas of Development

Physical

  • Runs without falling
  • Walks up and down stairs alone.
  • Can tiptoe and march.
  • Jumps off a low step.
  • Can put together simple puzzles.
  • Uses paintbrushes and crayons, and enjoys fingerplay games.

 

Cognitive

  • Knows where things go and is beginning to do little errands.
  • Imitates; enjoys working and doing side-by-side parent/child activities.
  • Needs sameness, routine suits him, enjoys repetition.
  • Does not separate goal from the way of achieving the goal (fills pail with and not so much to have a pail full of sand but because he likes puttingand into his pail).
  • Aware of opposties, "come and go," "fast and slow."

 

Emotional & Social

  • Gentle, friendly, calmer, surer, and better balanced.
  • Happy much fo the time, less demanding.
  • Deeply in love with parents; likes people.
  • Comfortable wtih himself.
  • Parallel play, with little interaction.
  • Enjoys being near other children, will often imitate them.

 

Language

  • Speech blossoming.
  • Sentences of 3 words or more.
  • Knows 200 - 300 words.
  • May use verbal sound effects to accompany solitary play.
  • Talks to himself as much as he does to other people.

Recommended Toys

  • Interlocking puzzles.
  • Storybooks with simple stories and rhymes, more detail in pictures.
  • Stacking boxes.
  • LEGO or building materials.
  • Hand puppets, crochetted hand puppets.
  • Peg board, wooden with large pegs and holes.
  • Shape sorters.
  • Chalkboard and chalk, large non-toxic crayons.
  • Tea sets, cooking utensils.
